Jean Bart had all her main guns forward because she (and other French battleships of the 1930s) were designed to counter the fast Italian battleships. It was an assumed the more lightly armed and armored Italian ships would flee upon encountering the French battle line, resulting in a stern chase. So all the guns were placed in two 4-gun turrets at the bow. These were not quadruple mounts, but two twin mounts on a common turntable, each pair of guns on a single slide. To reduce the possibility of a single hit knocking out half the ship's firepower, an armored bulkhead ran down the length of the turret between the two pairs of guns.

Just sayin, trying to chase down a fucking Benham when you're 3v1, have 2/3 caps, and are less than 150 points from winning is how throws happen. Thankfully it didn't in this case, but it sure could have.
