The Bab-el Mandeb Strait, or the Gate of Tears, is a vital passageway for ships traveling through the Suez Canal, but recent attacks from Houthis are creating a major maritime choke point.

Even at calm & piece time to pass through Red Sea and Suez requires from shipping company or charterers to engage security escort teams on board for passage, increased insurance payments and most expensive – pilotage and port’s expenses for formalities & passage through Suez. All this maybe equal (or at least compensate considerable part) of fuel price for extra miles which ship must travel via South Africa.
