To make a full confession. I remember the day that I learned that the phases of the moon have nothing to do with earth's shadow. I remember it well because I was 28 years old.
To my credit. I never believed that the earth was flat.

How hard is that to understand? Plus, since the planet rotates, the Sun and Moon move in an arch for a reason.
And because the Moon orbits on its own time, that is why you can see it in the daytime as well. It depends on its position.
The planet rotates. We are in time with the planets rotation. The Moon and Sun are not, for they are their own celestial bodies.

The reason is that especially in America but in lots of places the education system is a complete failure.
Basic facts are taken as read therefore never taught. Meaning that people who don't pick up those facts early in life sometimes never learn them.
You'd be stunned how many smart and intelligent people hold ridiculous beliefs simply because they're missing fundamental information that should have been given to them but wasn't.
