Ramaz Gorgadze, a young aspiring TikTok rapper, was among them. Before the assault, he sent a last message to his mother, and then went missing.

Days later, a rare protest letter from the Black Berets emerged online. The men claimed that “inept” commanders threw them into an “incomprehensible offensive” and called them “meat”.

What happened to Ramaz and his comrades of the 155?

In “They Call Us Meat”, BBC Eye, using only publicly available footage and testimonies, shows how glaring tactical mistakes caused one of the highest concentration of losses for a single Russian unit since the beginning of the war.

  2. Not really sure what BBC (as a UK state institution) is trying to achieve with this type of content. Sure analysis is valuable and interesting. But those russian soldiers are almost displayed as heroes. When they are really not. Most of them volunteer and happily go on 'Ukrainian safari'. And if they did survive and breakthrough they would go on raping, torturing and killing civilians they find on their way (proved many times by the same BBC). So please do the analysis, please share poor russian military tactics but don't show them as human beings texting their moms and living normal lives – because they're really are not – just a bunch of murderous nazified beasts who go to Ukraine to destroy life as we know it.

  3. russian meat sent to die in a brutal war.
    Their response?
    WRITING LETTERS!
As that anonymous Ukrainian hero said at the beginning of the war; "Thank god they are so stupid".
Great documentary BBC. I almost felt sorry for the russian invaders, then I remembered some of the horrible attrocities inflicted on Ukrainian people.

  4. One needs to ask at what point are Russian citizens willing to tolerate losing sons, brothers, husbands and fathers? One thing I noticed is that the vast majority of meat comes from remote eastern parts of Russia. We need more stories like this.

  5. It might seem like they aren't using tactics, but this is actually an old cold war era tactic. It is to send waves of troops to overwhelm the opposition and to do it for as long as they have men to send. Right now if the United States doesn't replenish them, this way of fighting can win the war for Russia. It will be a major loss for democracy if they do.

  6. thank you bbc for my daily dose of western anti-russian propaganda, when are you going to talk about the real cannon fodder that NATO uses? You took and continue to take thousands of Ukrainians to your country to train them, they are hunted like cattle in the main Ukrainian cities and then they are handed over to you for training and then they are sent to the battlefield and that's where it all ends for them, When are they going to tell that Ukraine is already in its twelfth mobilization? When are they going to show images of how in Ukraine they are hunting Ukrainians and forcibly taking them to fight? When are they going to talk about how Ukrainian men are prohibited from leaving Ukraine and that many have already died trying to cross the border? When are they going to talk about Ukraine now starting to mobilize women and also lowering the age of forced mobilization to 20 years? When are they going to talk about Zelensky not wanting to call elections? When are they going to talk about the internal war between Zelensky and the Ukrainian military wing? The Ukrainian military is now the new Ukrainian oligarchy since they were filled with money, with all the money that you and partners sent them.

  7. Are you Seriously expecting Sympathy for the Invaders. What about Ukraine Soldiers and their Families?

  8. Regardless of the side your on, this is a bad situation for all those who have to go and fight! Crazy how the families just up and go looking for their children. Much respect and sorrow for all sides. This young guy's experience and ultimate death shows the devastation governments can have. Russia, Ukraine, NATO and all the allies are part of this problem. The average people like Marina also are never going to recover fully regardless of the outcome. Very devastating!

  9. How little Putin cares about his pawns. The tragedy of serving a capricious dictator. Vugledar is leveled, no longer a city but a skeleton of rubble.
