This Tiny Island Is the Most Densely Defended Country in the World | WSJ

World

Singapore, a city state around the same size as New York City, has built one of Southeast Asia’s most advanced militaries. Despite being at peace with its neighbors, Singapore’s defense budget was over $11 billion in 2022, ranking it per capita among the highest in the world.

Singapore has ordered 20 F-35 jets and its navy is increasing its number of submarines to eight, more submarines than both its larger neighbors Malaysia and Indonesia combined.

WSJ takes a closer look at why this small nation is pouring billions into its armed forces.

  3. Wouldn't make sense for a country this small to get two or three aircraft carriers?
They would represent a serious threat and "disperse" more their forces

  4. People keep saying someone is gonna invade Singapore who TF wants or interested to invade Singapore seriously it has nothing beside some ports. that can be easily replaced.

  5. Gaza has a land depth one fifth of Singapore, a military force that wears slippers t-shirts, against a country that is much bigger and stronger than Singapore. I think Singapore is not as undefensible as one might think.

  6. It can only do so much with the weapons it has until they run out of ammo. It’s an island that imports pretty much everything it has which in turn can be blockaded by a superior navy. Its defense capabilities is impressive but definitely not enough to protect its livelihood.

  8. I always really liked Singapore’s military.
It’s small compared to the other major or even regional sized militaries around the world but it is one of the most advanced and they have some of the best training of any nation in the entire region.

  10. Bro this is not how real war works, it's not that all of Singapore army would be directly involved in a 1v1 fight. All of this army means nothing if you don't have air defense systems, naval forces, drone fleet or ballistic missiles. Seriously what is a tank going to do if China sends 100+ ballistic missiles? Also, Singapore is SO small that its the EASIEST country to wipe out from the map ONLY with aerial strikes, meaning all these landforces have no meaning at all, since the enemy WON'T invade from land but from the sea and air. Singapore SHOULD boost it's air defense, missile, drone and potentially missile arsenal instead of using conventional methods for a tiny island. Meanwhile China is laughing. Take Ukraine as an example, they have proven that air defense + drones + cruise missiles is far mor superior compared to tanks + airforce. NO COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WOULD INVADE SINGAPORE, simply because they can wipe out Singapore in 1 strike. Only one tactical nuclear strike and Singapore gone….

  11. The problem is in a modern war, Singapore would have been wiped out no matter how amount of defence was established. In modern war, countries with more sufficient weaponry and resources can deal a long war. Singapore, with its Luxembourg-size appearance, can't withstand no matter how well-armed it is. It's hoping to build a Trojan defence but I doubt it work.

  13. It's a sad reflection of the globe itself. However, if I were in the government of one the richest territories on earth, I would probably be compelled to do the same. Take the money factor away and the picture is significantly altered.
