Huge thanks to Okouchi-San and Dr. Sakai and everyone at NIED and the Large Scale Rainfall Simulator for their time, expertise and access to this amazing facility.

A big thank you to Prof. Olga Mavrouli and Prof. Bill Schulz for their invaluable expertise on the mechanisms of landslides.

  1. I wonder why the whole world seems restricted to the USA Japan Europe and maybe Australia. The rainiest place is not on any one of these continents or countries. Maybe its time to open up your mind? brain? eyes? or something else to see the whole world. Check out to see the rainiest (natural) place on earth and you will be surprised that its not in the center of universe (USA)!!

  2. "Japan is a nation of natural disasters, from earthquakes, to tsunamis, to floods…. " you forgot Godzilla!!!

  3. the last time u make video about japan earthquake they got earthquake.. lets not hope for any typhoon or landslide in the next month

  4. Since Japan is a country with lots of natural disasters like earthquakes and floods, it’s not strange why they have the largest rainfall and earthquake simulators. Hope new technology can prevent more people from suffering from these bad things.

  5. I would have loved a video all about this building, not five minutes and the rest just about landslides and climate change.

  6. Wait wait wait. Water doesn't make it more slippery. It just increases the pressure between particles to decrease friction and make it slippery!? That means water makes it slippery. I would say that decreasing the friction, is making it slippery.

  7. Wow, that landslide footage is INSANE! I feel sorry for everyone who's had to endure something like that.

  8. So you mean to tell me that Japan, obviously Japan, has a moving rainfall building… that sounds absolutely ridiculous and cool

  9. I'm not denying climate change but you're not gaining any points for showing a tsunami which was the result of tectonic activity while taking about and thus implying a relation to climate change.

  10. Great video, and wow I thought thought coastal British Columbia had a lot of rain, but Yakushima Island in Japan gets about 3x higher! One quibble: at 14:12 the footage is of the great 2011 tsunami (caused by an earthquake), not a flood related to climate change.

  11. The cut from "trees are incredibly effective at preventing landslides" to the saw and deforestation was 10/10. Great editing, skillfully juxtaposing the importance of trees with the harsh reality of their destruction, delivering a powerful message about environmental conservation and the consequences of human actions.

  12. It's an EXTREME overstatement and generalization, based on many very large (and false) assumptions, to say, "as the world heats up due to humanity's addiction to fossil fuels." This is propaganda BS and it's sad a scientifically minded person would buy into that wholesale without extreme levels of nuance and skepticism.

  13. the work these gentleman do is saving millions of lives annually, thank you for shedding light on this type of work <3

  14. Another video idea along the lines of these natural disasters is avalanches. Here in Utah there is a big backcountry skiing scene and avalanche education is paramount. I feel like there’s lots of cool stuff to explore there, including searching along flux lines with an avalanche transceiver to find buried victims

  15. The most insane thing from this that I learned was that Tokyo has a massive underground network for flooding. It looks so colossal, I can't imagine how eerie it must feel to be down there.

Also for someone who clearly doesn't speak English a lot, that Japanese man did a great job. Most Japanese people don't attempt to pronounce "L" as they don't use it in Japanese, but he did and I appreciate it.

  16. This is a cool video. I did think that water lubricated the sand. Now I know better.

I also thought it was cute that they put tape over the Tesla logo at 13:33 as if that's all it takes to hide what kind of car it is. It is obviously a Tesla interior. And even if you didn't know that, there's a picture of it on the dash screen.

  17. 2:55 – little bit of stinging rain, big ol fat rain, rain that blew in sideways, and rain that seemed to come up from underneath!

  18. Love being lectured about the fact we aren't doing enough for the environment by a guy that sends one team to Japan on a jet and takes another jet to Australia. Hypocrites abound.
