The MAGIC FIX For Better Performance in DCS World 2.9!

World

Today I wanted to highlight a magic bullet for increasing your performance in DCS World when it comes to load times and that lowest 99th percentile dip in your FPS.

Lately I have been extremely frustrated with DCS World 2.9 and its performance and more specifically the consistency of its performance.

I recently went a bit overboard with my home cockpit refresh and built an entirely new rig for playing DCS World and Video Editing.

This PC is a monster with an intel i9-14900K, RTX 4090, 64 GB of Ram… the works.

Now normally you’d think that this would translate to a huge increase in DCS World’s performance… and it did…. With the huge caveat of much higher highs when it came to FPS, and much lower lows in the 99th percentile… and weirdly long load times for missions and then textures once I was in the cockpit.

And on top of this it was extremely inconsistent, sometimes I would hop in the cockpit on a simple empty mission with no other units around and it would be a stuttery, screen tearing mess that was nearly unplayable…

Then on my next play session I would fly in a DCS Multiplayer server with 50 other pilots and get fantastic performance I could have only dreamed about a few years ago.

This inconsistency and huge ups and downs in FPS had me ready to tear my hair out as I tried every combination of graphics settings possible trying to fix this frustrating inconsistency!

After trying everything possible within DCS World’s settings and options I decided to look outside of the realm of graphics settings and look deeper into issues of inconsistent performance of applications across the board in windows 11.

This is where I finally found the culprit… Windows Defender… As usual… and I feel really stupid that I hadn’t caught this earlier.

So let’s dive into how we can keep Windows Defender to stay the hell away from DCS World and all other apps you use to enhance your DCS experience!

  1. Hey guys! Due to an issue with the video I had to delete and reupload it, that being said I am still extremely happy I found this fix, as i was ready to pull my hair out when it came to performance issues in DCS World!

  2. I had some stuttering on the Nevada map last night and I tried using process lasso to fix it, disabling hyper threading. it seemed to have worked

  3. You are the man!, this is GOLD! 72 stable FPS in Enigma Cold War server…no words to thank you for this info.

  4. Two things I did that made a huge difference were forcing DCS to only use the performance cores. And also disabling cores that were getting stuck on 100% utilization in the main menu. In VR it was a night and day difference.

DCS really doesn't seem to use 13 and 14th gen CPU's well unless you use software to manage it yourself.

  5. Probably one of if not the worst advice to give to people online. If you only play singleplayer and never download mods or missions or any other file from ED then sure go for it.

But if you do then this really is the worst thing to do and your only making your PC the most vulnerable it can be

  6. Do you really need 11min to say that you should exclude DCS from windows defender or other virus and firewall applications?

  7. Perfect timing. I have a similar system as you and am struggling with inconsistent performance. Will try your tips tonight!

  8. I'm running an old system in win 10 and vr and it's been a horrible experience for a long time. This fix works wonders even in win 10. Its not perfect but atleast its playable for me now. It may not be the best solution securitywise in the long run but hopefully that will be fixed.
Thanks a bunch for this, Spud!😉

  9. Hi. In France, we have an expression saying " you kick open doors". Of course you must say to windows defender to not look in DCS directories like DCS himself and …saved gameDCS to play DCS, in the same manner you must turn your computer ON to play DCS. Sorry to say that but your video is useless. Turning Windows defender OFF for DCS directories, it's the basic skills.

  10. Just turn off realtime protection and test if FPS increases, if it does then do the rest of the tutorial, if not, no point carrying on.

  11. The problem I have comes with the AI causing massive FPS drops. We are talking about SAM sites, they seem to be extemely cpu intensive.

  12. Hey Spud! Nice video! One thing that made DCS butter smooth for me was putting 128gb page file on an Nvme. Even 64gb is getting low for detailed missions.

  13. Cyber attacks are no joke, more than ever its more important to keep guard. Maybe its not Windows that's the problem, maybe its DCS?

  14. Well after all the wet farts moaning that excluding MD from scanning these files and bogging down DCS performance ill be the first to comment just to say that some of us appreciate you sharing the fix and ill be doing the same later on. Thanks spud for dedicating your time and effort to create a video that will help other simmers with this problem. Keep up the great work 👍

  15. Hey spud, what motherboard did you go with? I'm going with a 14th gen intel cpu soon and some mobos need a BIOS update before they'll boot with a 14th gen cpu. I want one thats ready to go out of the box for 14th gen.

  16. “most” Potato PCs run non-VR DCS just fine, a 1400K + 4090 isn’t even necessary in pancake mode. 😂 Also, just kill windows defender, it’s garbage to begin with and it slows down the computer and is a resource hog.

  17. I think that one advice is to have a PC for DCS or gaming only and say an Apple device (completely different OS) for your sensitive stuff. That is one that you download stuff to and one that you leave clean.

    Balas
  18. Hey that's pretty good! I made the changes before doing a proper "before" test but the MT version does feel a bit more playable to me now. (It hated my old i5-7500 before and I would often be forced to fly with the ST version, which is getting buggier with every update and will soon be completely abandoned.)

I'll try putting it back as it was tomorrow and do some more controlled A/B tests. But this should help!

    Thanks Spud!

  19. DCS Creates a boatload of temporary files on your C drive. If your C drive is close to full move all of your games to a different SSD and it will run buttery smooth.

  20. Dude you just saved my sanity. I have been TEARING my hair out over performance inconsistencies in W11 and this just fixed DCS VR for me AND even helped by applying the same technique to STALKER GAMMA. You are the GOAT

    Balas
  21. Whatever this did, I am now unable to launch the game at all in VR. DCS simply crashes on launch… Quest 3 for reference, using link cable.

  22. I’d be very keen to hear how you went through the PC upgrade process. Did you go the Intel 14900K for gaming and video editing? If you were interested in only DCS would you consider 7800X3D?

I’m still sporting the Intel 6700K and it’s running 100%. Definitely looking into upgrading this year.

  23. You had me at TrackIR! I've been struggling with random stuttering for weeks now with it…..sometimes its smooth as silk, other times it's a stuttering mess and it's completely random. I'm definitely going to try this along with another fix I saw today. Cheers bud 🍻

  24. I'm a fan of your usual contant @Spudknocker, but I have to say that this video is really irresponsible. The risks you are proposing to people that probably don't realize it are very real, and you didn't even include any warning comments.I seriously hope no bad actors exploit you or the thousands of people that watch this.

  25. Ohhh, there was an exclusion already included for BMS Falcon. Must have been an option on install.
