  1. The scariest thing here is that food was being made in what looks to be quite disgusting environments, but the reality is that even places outside of Kowloon are making food in similar conditions.

  2. Dami: An ideal way to map such a Labyrinthine structure where one suite address can occupy multiple levels would be to identify the suite number of each address along a named route as it snakes through different floors and different buildings like memories occupying different sites in the neural pathways of the human brain. Such a map would look like a common metro transit map with separate routes that parallel, overlap, and connect one another at junctures. Each path will have its own name and number and perhaps even final destination(like outdoor courtyard)or even purpose(like medical facilities)resembling numbered bus routes. My Grandma recounted just such a historic meeting she had as a Jewish child while living in post-WWII Hong Kong. Grandma was about fourteen years old and was visiting the Kowloon (“Gull Lūng” in Cantonese meaning “ Nine Dragons”)Walled City with her parents’ housekeeper. They were led by an exotic aroma to a little space under one of these interconnecting stairwells where a tiny middle aged gentleman and his wife were preparing their daily batch of freshly prepared oyster sauce for sale. “Buy this!” he yelled. “It’s better than the ‘Hup Sing Loong,” brand oyster sauce!” Grandma again drawn by the rich creamy texture of the man’s creation, motioned to her housekeeper to purchase a bottle which he poured fresh from a funnel. “You will not regret it young lady,” he added. “And you are?” Grandma asked in fluent Cantonese. “My name is “Lee Kum Kee.” Do not dismiss me because of my poor surroundings. I had just arrived some months ago from China. I will become famous in Hong Kong first and then I will open a factory in the United States where my oyster sauce will be known throughout the world as “Lee Kum Kee Premium Oyster Sauce.” As Grandma was leaving the Walled City premises, her Chinese housekeeper turned to Grandma and chuckling whispered…”dreamer.” Dad sprinkles some Lee Kum Kee oyster sauce he bought from Superstore onto stir fried beef slices he will add to the bok choy for tonight’s dinner. ❤Diane, Vancouver, Canada. 3. Safety 3rd! Stupid OSHA brings everyone back 4 steps. Deregulation is the first step towards economic development.

  4. I love the idea of this, i would love to explore kowloon without all of the crime, so sad that such a cool sounding concept was such a horrible place to live

  5. It's such a shame it's gone. What a place of wonder. Is there another place even remotely like it anywhere in the world? I doubt it.

  6. It was built in the Old Fort compound which was legally part of China and under their control but they just decided not to police it.
