The BEST Race of the 2024 World Championships

World

Aside from the 100 Free world record on Day 1, it had been a pretty quiet world championships… until the men’s 800 Free Relay made history.

3 men split 1:43, the top 3 teams were within .24 of each other, and a 16-year-old held off the reigning world champion to bring his team to victory.

  1. Just wait to see what Caleb does in Paris! I expecting him to break the world record in the 100 free and either get the gold or get second to Pan. But I think its going to be the battle of the century.

  2. Korean is the best squad while China may substitute 1-2 guys at Olympic. China is not in full power but amazing potential.

  3. I'd add a couple of points. Many teams didn't send their best to the meet for obvious reasons, giving some young athletes opportunities to gain world stage experience. Nice surprise! The overall time for all top three teams could be better. However, if you look at a recent winning time of 1:46+ by former 100 wr holder and still young David Popovici, you will appreciate these three teams more. I expect the medalling time to be sub 7 this summer!

  5. it's worth noting that China men's team used same 4 guys for both 4×100 and 4×200 and won both competitions.

  7. I don’t really agree with this video. The winning time in today’s relay was just 7:01.84, much slower than at the 2022 WCs (7:00.24) and 2023 WCs (6:59.08). It’s also worth noting that 7:00.02 last year got silver. I didn’t find today’s relay particularly interesting to watch.

A couple of the gold medal-winning times in Doha have been slightly faster than what we got at the previous 2 WCs, such as:

    -W 200 IM (2:07.05)
    -W 200 breast (2:19.81)

And at least two of the silver and bronze medal podiums have also been faster than the last 2 WCs, such as the M 50 breast and W 100 breast. There’s a decent chance that the men’s 50 free will have all three medallists going under 21.5 too.

I would rank all of those races mentioned as much more compelling than a somewhat sluggish relay.

  8. There is a 14 year old and a 16 year old on China’s women’s relay team who won the 4x200m freestyle race. Looks like China is lock n loaded for Paris
