Trace the history of ketchup, from the condiment’s origins in 3rd century China to becoming a staple of American cuisine.
—
In the mid-18th century, England was crazy for ketchup. The sauce was a staple, but this ketchup wasn’t the ubiquitous red goop you’re familiar with today. In fact, it was a sweet and savory brown sauce that didn’t even have tomatoes in it. So where did this early ketchup come from, and how did it become the dip we know and love? Dan Kwartler traces the condiment’s history.

That hotdog and ketchup 4:31 is SUS
Catsup actually. Then Heinz rebranded as ketchup.
BUT WHAT ABOUT BANANA SAUCE. JUFRAIN is everything ketchup wishes it was. If you're looking for non-Newtonian red, Banana sauce is the only answer.
Not a fan of weird animations. Weird asf for no reason
Catsup?
I certainly wasn't expecting a twirking tomato in a Ted-Ed video. Yet, here we are.
After this vid, I don’t want to hear any westerners complain about filipino banana ketchup anymore. Turns out you just adopted bagoong isda
Didn't expect to see Doki twerking on here…
These animations were even sauciers than ever… Sus 😳😳😳
Salt Bae reference 😅
3:31 a twerking tomato? This video is wild
How about banana ketchup
Never thought I'd see the day I witness a tomato twerking on a ted-ed video
i was not ready for asian salt bae.
Bro I remember spending all night trying to figure this out for my project 💀
Watching this while driving
Hi!! I’m from Brazil and I love to watch your videos, especially the ones “Why should you read”. There’s many of it, and would be great if you make for some book of Machado de Assis, like “Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas”, it’s a classic of literature, and very important for our country. Sorry for my english, i’m learning yet. Thank you
and then there is banana ketchup painting itself red
I watch this just before eating dinner which will definitely have ketchup now. Could you do one on mayonnaise?
You meant murican. America is a continent, but ok
3:33 smash
i hate this low-quality animation
The animation of the hot dog was kind of unsettling
banana ketchup deserved a mention in this 🥹😭
Dang! It is surprising to still learn how Europeans exploited people around the world due to their laziness and ineptitude. Dang!
4:28 I think the animator knew what hes doing
They didn't miss the opportunity for any ketchup puns
Most excellent.
worcester what???? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 americans… 😂😂😂😂😂
Lol I noticed you said "fact checked videos" thats because a lot of people like me come on here and correct you guys then you repost the video correctly and say your "team" fact checked it… I'm an educated and intelligent person and I have caught mistakes on your videos before… this is also the first time I heard you say "fact checked video."
Ketchup, my beloved 😍
Side note— mustard was more of a powdered seasoning not a condiment, an hot sauce was an ingredient in the form of pepper. Mayo was just eggs, a main dish. But vinegar was the OG for sure, had no idea it transformed into ketchup
No one give two sh*ts about this!!
Proof that ketchup is the best sauce, except on shawarma if you put ketchup on shawarma I'm coming for you himar
Interesting to see this after Max Millers episode
the whole vid was an amalgamation of various memes lol
three tomatoes where walking down the street 😂
The details in this video were so saucy
😑 . . . Let me guess: you got it from Mr. Foote?
4:33 it's unecessary to to sexualize this content for what is an educational video.
Thanks.
In the Philippines, we have banana ketchup that was invented due to lack of tomato supplies during world war 2. Try it, it's delicious and can be used in many dishes too.
😁👌🏾
