The group stages are done and dusted and we are now left with 8 teams in the ongoing T20 World Cup who will fight for the title. The Super 8 stage kicks off at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua with co-hosts United States of America (USA) taking on South Africa on Wednesday (June 19).
The USA surprised everyone by qualifying for the next round ahead of Pakistan the favorites from Group A along with India. They would be keen to carry on the good performances they have shown in the first round of the ongoing global event. The Monank Patel-led side defeated Canada and Pakistan.
Then a washout against Ireland confirmed them a place in the Super 8s. Their only defeat in the tournament was against India where they gave the Men in Blue a tough fight but couldn’t get over the line. South Africa on the other hand topped their group and are unbeaten in the tournament so far.
The Proteas have not had the best of times as a batting unit but their bowlers have done the job for them not allowing the opposition to post big totals. The top order has been an issue for South Africa including the form of their skipper Aiden Markram. The 29-year-old has made just 31 runs in four matches so far in the T20 World Cup 2024.
The lone shining star in their batting has been Miller who has bailed them out a couple of times. The left-hander is the leading run-getter for the Proteas with 101 runs from four games. The pitches have supported bowlers the first phase of the tournament but the Proteas batters would be keen work their shot selection ahead of the Super 8s.
South Africa are likely to start this contest as favourites considering the amount of superstars they have in their line-up. The thing that could be the deciding factor in this game is how the USA batters tackle the pace trio of Anrich Nortje Kagiso Rabada and Ottniel Baartman. Which team will begin the Super 8s with a win?
The Americans would be forgiven for pinching themselves. Few would have expected them to reach this stage of the men’s T20 World Cup. Yet there they are among the elated eight teams who remain in the running and not one of the disappointed dozen who exited after the group games.
They had a little help from a washout against Ireland in Lauderhill on Friday. Perhaps the small Florida city should be renamed Laundryhill – three of the four games scheduled there suffered the same fate. That’s not to cast aspersions on the United States’ progression. They hammered Canada in the tournament opener.
Then held their nerve to overcome Pakistan in a Super Over. Let there be no doubt that they are a proud and resourceful team. Is it too much to hope that they could add South Africa to their list of felled giants in their match in North Sound on Wednesday? Probably but no doubt many Pakistanis thought that before their bubble burst.
Besides it’s not as if the South Africans have been convincing. Batting conditions have been difficult but that does not explain why they struggled to beat the Netherlands and Nepal. Although they have reeled off four consecutive wins not one of them has been comfortably done. Their batting line-up might feel exposed and fragile as a consequence.
Which makes this the perfect time for them to be picked off by unfancied opponents. And unfancied the Americans surely are. Saurabh Netravalkar is having a fairytale tournament and counts Rizwan Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma among his wickets. He will need to be at least as good and solidly supported to be part of a victory.
