The T20 World Cup 2024 heats up with regular thrillers and we might have another one when the neighbours – England and Scotland – face off in a Group B fixture at Kensington Oval Bridgetown Barbados in the sixth game of the tournament on Tuesday (June 4). England return to Bridgetown where the memories are sweet for the defending champions. It was in 2010 when the English scripted history on Caribbean soil by winning their first-ever ICC silverware.
Jos Buttler who led England to their second T20 World Cup glory in 2022 continues to lead the side in limited-overs cricket and is under pressure to defend the title. England are coming off a 2-0 T20I series win over Pakistan whom they defeated in the last edition’s final of this marquee event at Melbourne.
But the defending champions don’t have the services of the star all-rounder Ben Stokes who played a crucial hand in the title win back in 2022 because of his unavailability for the mega event. Things didn’t go well when Buttler and his team travelled to India for their ODI World Cup title defense back in 2023 but they want to put behind the lackluster performance and turn up strongly in the shortest format of the game.
The squad has similar faces with express pacer Jofra Archer returning to competitive cricket in the series against Pakistan and doing well after a long injury layoff. Alex Hales David Willey Stokes Dawid Malan Chris Woakes and Tymal Mills miss out from the unit that played the last WC. Will Jacks Archer Ben Duckett Jonny Bairstow Tom Hartley and Reece Topley make it into the squad this time for obvious reasons On the other hand Scotland have been participating in the competition since the inaugural edition but haven’t been able to maintain consistency.
Missing out on odd occasions. They managed to sneak into the Super 12 round in 2021 which is their best tournament. Led by Richard Berrington the Scottish unit finished runners-up in the Tri-Series in the Netherlands which involved Ireland and the hosts. They are playing in the fourth straight T20 WC and made it to the main event after winning the European Regional Qualifiers. While England didn’t play a single warm-up game Scotland had two opportunities.
But the game against Uganda was washed out due to inclement weather. In the second warm-up fixture against Afghanistan the Scottish side lost the contest by 55 runs. Meanwhile Scotland are set to play their first T20I in the Caribbean Islands. There is weather around for this clash. It might rain during the game.
England don’t have a great record against the European nations in the shortest format. This is the first time they are playing against Scotland in T20Is. Namibia and Oman had a Super Over finish in the last game played at this venue. Can Scotland start the competition with a massive upset? Will England manage to break the World Cup jinx against the European compatriots? This will be Scotland’s first T20I in the Caribbean.
What to expect: There’s increasing help for spinners in the second innings here and teams prefer to bat first in day games which is evident in a win percentage of 66 for them. Namibia and Oman played in a low-scorer Super Over finish in the tournament opener at this venue and David Wiese admitted to the pitch playing a “little bit differently” than he expected. But that said the weather in the leadup to the tournament has been wet which could have adversely affected the pitch preparations. There are rains predicted for the match day too.
