How Hyundai Became The Third Largest Automaker In The World

World

Hyundai Motor Group is the 3rd largest automaker in the world by volume. In the 1990s, it suffered low sales and a reputation for low quality. Now its three auto brands – Hyundai, Kia and Genesis – are nipping at the heels of well established competitors, and winning award after award. While Tesla still dominates the EV industry, Hyundai and Kia are inching closer. But the company also wants to revolutionize manufacturing, invest in robotics, autonomous driving and flying taxis, ambitions that many rivals have abandoned. But the company has also faced setbacks: a plague of thefts, millions of vehicles at risk of catching fire, a looming union push and a snub from the U.S. government.

  1. I own 2 of them. A 2020 Palisade Limited, and 2022 Santa Cruz Limited.
    They're not just "bargain" cars. I also own a 2018 BMW X3.
I chose Hyundai over other brands e.g. Honda, Toyota. And have zero remorse.

  2. I've bought Hyundai exclusively for 20 years. Never had an issue with them. I've had great experience with customer service at dealerships. I only take my vehicle only to dealership for maintenance. I've been buying the Elantra for 10 years. Originally I bought the Sonata .. but now it's too big for my needs.

  3. Hyundai definitely had a massive glow up, going from the “meh generic car” brand to one highly renowned for its innovative technology. But I think we gotta give special credit to Kia. They’ve gone from what was once the most unreliable, unsafe, and unrespectable car brands in existence to what is essentially a premium car brand now. They got the stinger, a genuinely amazing sports car, and their/hyundai’s electric cars are probably some of the best, if not the best, EVs on the market.

  4. Marketing is the key! See how they sponsor those YouTubers every time they release a new car. Their marketing/revenue ratio is the highest in the entire car industry.

  5. Even being a low quality copycat, people need to understand, is no mean feat.
Do you understand how many countries in the world, not only build cars, but export them globally?
Not many. Does Canada have their own car builder? How about the Netherlands.
So the fact that Hyundai went from "low quality copycat" to the 3rd biggest by volume is astounding. And whether or not you personally like their cars, you can't afford to continue laughing at them. Because even in the 90s they were no laughing stock. And certainly is not now.

  7. I called it on Kia over a decade ago I use to tell people that these cars were good AF and nobody cared . Now look 🔥

  8. It makes sense considuring cars are becoming more like the handheld consumer electronics industry which korea dominates. Government warning don't park in garage or to close to residence spontaneous combustion not yet addressed but very well-known & understood

  10. As an Ioniq 5 onwer i would never buy a gas hyundai. Everytime i go near my dealer it is packed with engine and trans issue cars. Not an EV in sight. 😊

  12. I feel like Hyundai reflected many things very nicely. They took a look a japanes reliability and their idea of products to be even reliant when not handled in ideal conditions (opposite to european cars). As well as the japanese they tried to keep costs down and remain with affordable cars. Yet their idea of infotainment, car handling etc. refers more to european cars and they were a lot less conservative with EVs in opposition to european and especially japanes automotiv OEMs. Basically they now make quite reliable, interesting, decent cost vehicles now which really pays off for. Good for them

  13. Lol, still garbage engines that clog up with carbon, and poor security features. Obviously yall got paid to promote their products.

  14. change the thumbnail, the only people that respect hyundais are people that don't know anything about cars. 2014-2022 hyundai models have insurance premiums because they're that easy to steal. A hyundai may have more bells and whistles than a similarly priced toyota for example… but how do you think they're able to do that? cheaping out on other things like build quality and materials

  15. They are very good at design, but they need to focus more on reliability and addressing the issues rather than making redesigns & refreshes.
This does not mean to stop new development but to place better processes to ensure all issues are caught early one and any issue found will be addressed ASAP not to take 2-3 years until its addressed.

  16. Tesla is similar to Amazon, buy on line and shows up at your home. Buying a car should be exciting but salespeople at dealership make it a horrible situation. They take advantage of ignorance of value of trade ins and financing. They try and sell you all these confusing packages, and even trying you pay upfront for future maintenance plans. Educated people get the best deal and most families are ripped off. Something has to change. All these fabric and paint treatments added to msrp. Window treatments and nitrogen in tires. There can be several thousand dollars of add ons. I do not want add ons. Cars are a depreciating liability. I do not want every option in the book. I want more standard equipment not options. Teslas come optioned the same. You just pick the size of the vehicle. Then dealerships add the $3000-$15000 popularity tax. A few months later the car is not as popular. Most dealerships will tell you selling more cars on line vs floor. Every floor model has 2 MSRP’s one for internet(cheaper) and floor msrp. You can shop state or country wide and have vehicle shipped. If you shop in same city, you buy on line and pick up in fleet sales walking past those terrible salespeople

  17. The part that makes the automotive manufacturers fear Hyundai the most is that Hyundai is the only manufacturer who owns its own mining operation and forges. They produce their own steel and aluminum from mineral to finished rolled product. No other manufacturer has this capability.

  18. Most cars are reliable as long as you stick the maintenance schedule. Many people don't, which is why their car usually breaks down and then they foolishly blame it on the manufacturer.

Engine oil and transmission fluid must be changed religiously, they're the most important and costly to repair.

Some cars having notorious, dangerous, and unacceptable defects are rare, like the Ford Pinto that would blow up in a rear end collision.

  20. In 2017, I had to rent a car on a trip to the Bay Area. The set me up with a 2016 Hyundai Elantra. After that, I knew my next vehicle was going to be a new Hyundai. The real seller was the infotainment system. Having Android Auto was a game changer, and also the car itself was enjoyable to drive. A few years later I purchased a 2017 Elantra. Other than bad solenoids that I replaced easily myself, it has been a great car.

  21. Currently driving an Ioniq 6 (same color as displayed at 0:45). It is simply amazing – best car I have ever had and we ever had in the family. Before that we had a c-class, a3, a6, VW Passat, T4. Now we have the Ioniq 6 for daily commute and a VW T6.1 for longer trips with the family. We think about switching to the EV9 for the T6.1 but maybe we take the Ioniq 7 or remain – lets see.

  22. This korean car manufacturer has used US as test dummies for their vehicles Hyundai engines, transmissions, especially the wiring, vacum lines hoses, are deliberately made to fail catastrophically nearly frim day one of ownership.

  23. Why do good cars and concept cars have to be concepts… Hyundai has decided they don't have to.
    HMG is awesome.

  25. FSD has become very expensive to develop. Many car manufacturers backing away as no business model. Many manufacturers happy with just level 2-3 vs 5. Tesla’s smaller mobile version Starlink world WiFi could end up in vehicles. This could work similar to airline TCAS, traffic control avoidance. GPS with real time updates where vehicles located and possible collision especially intersections. Still tons of legislative hurdles. Who is liable in a collision? Car passenger safety vs pedestrian safety? If we could prevent 50% of crashes and deaths, that saves 20,000 people a year!

  26. Before the 1960s, the biggest car company in south korea was Shinjin motors (1954-1981). Back then, there was a government mandated monopoly for passenger car manufacturer which was shinjin. Shinjin made cars for toyota, made models like the shinjin crown, corona, ace pick up. By the late 1960s, the government ended the monopoly. Hyundai (which was in ship building, construction industry already) and kia (which made bicycles and motorcycles) registered as passenger car manufacturers.

Kia owns a professional baseball team, kia tigers. Hyundai used to own a baseball team, hyundai unicorn.

  27. Anytime the US government has to tell a car manufacturer to fix the issues with your car or you cannot sell in North America, that said is a lot, no way in gods green earth. Would I bought a Hyundai Kia over a Toyota or a Honda, stop with the fake news Hundaes, and key is, I’m not very reliable, that’s like saying, Donald Trump is a genius, get a grip.
