First off that was an exciting races and congratulations to Hailu , Hiltz and Mackay. They/Them as a singular and plural pronoun will take time to incorporate in English vernacular . It just will. I don't have a problem referring to someone as they prefer but I don't think they/them should get upset for someone misidentifying if done without malice.
