Disney World Has Gotten Too Expensive

World

For years, I have watched as the price of a Disney World vacation has gotten more and more expensive. Since I haven’t been back to the parks since 2019, it got me thinking on just how expensive it has actually become. So, i’m going to find out! Im taking a single day trip, doing everything Disney wants me to do, to figure out just how expensive it really is. It turns out… very.

  1. I never went as a kid, but now I go yearly as an adult. I stay at Pop Century and have a good time, doing a week this year, but its gotta be a nightmare for some families with the genie+, reservations, etc etc.

  2. I do really appreciate you bringing this up and putting it out there because I know Disney people are a huge group of people and it's wild to milk your fan base like that.

  3. I paid $65 for a day at Tokyo Disney. I have no plans to return to WDW in the immediate future, and will instead continue exploring the world like EPCOT implores — and stopping at other Disney parks.

  4. My cousin and I enjoyed Skipper Canteen. But like you I'm in no hurry to head back. I'll probably do an Epic Universe trip long before another WDW trip.

  5. I bought Bitcoin and if it goes to $1,000,000 as some people believe, I might be able to afford a family vacation at Disney World. If not, I'll be watching YouTube videos and pretend I'm there.

  6. I love the parks. I'm a sucker for that magical, fun feeling. But even I have stopped going, its been over a year now. The prices are far too ridiculous. And the saddest part is, i dont see any price cuts coming any time soon.

  7. I've been one who would go to Disney every few years. I've stayed in the park (Polynesian for a week and Grand Floridian honeymoon suite), I even got married at Walt Disney in the Wedding pavilion in 2007 (it's really cool, as you walk down the aisle, they have a special glass that you can see the Magic Kingdom castle in the glass, it's incredible). I last went about 8 years ago. It's just too expensive now. I have a family of 4 and we did the numbers, it is just too much. 5 years ago, it was affordable, now, it's not.

I want to go and enjoy it but, seeing them rape you for every dollar, it would not be enjoyable. It's more of a cash grab for Disney than about the customer.

It's sad too, I would go and spend good money but, not like this.

  8. I first went to disney with my family in 2008, then again in 2012 and 2014 (2 being disneyland). I vividly remember the fastpass machines and miss them! I was a child though, so I never realized how expensive Disney really was and how privileged I was to be able to go. (I should note I only stayed on property once!). Last year, I went for the first time as an adult, and disney really is crazy expensive! My friend is a local, so I was able to stay with her and save on hotel costs, and also get in the parks for free with a combination of having cast-member friends and using volunteer free passes my friend had. Definitely not the average disney trip, but connections were the only way I could afford a disney trip as a college student. Also went during the off-season, so lines weren't as bad. We did epcot no problem, but Hollywood Studios wait times were insane. As I had been to the parks before though, I did not have an urgency to try out every single ride, and I enjoyed spending time with my friends!

  9. I’m in confusion! So there are some rides where you virtually queue ONLY, as in you can’t wait in line or you have to pay to ride? And you have to buy the app so you can virtually queue? Am I understanding that correctly?!
Me and my ex decided to go to Orlando on a whim to escape a weekend snowstorm and decided to go to Universal Studios over Disney. It seemed like choosing which Disney park, needing an app, and watching YouTube videos for planning tips was so complicated.
I went to Disney World twice with extended family in the 90s and early 00s. The price for just a family of 3 is out of reach and only valuable in memories when you compare it to a luxury international trip. It’s so sad that many families in this generation won’t be able to experience Disney World compared to 20 years ago.

  10. Are they still charging hotel guests for parking at hotels? That was a change that seemed to especially piss off loyal customers, with many declaring this was what would finally push them off-property.

  11. If I’m planning a trip, I don’t want it to be scheduled out to the minute like a world-changing military operation. I’m not storming the beaches of Normandy – I’m going on a freaking vacation! And where I have young children, and children don’t exactly follow strict itineraries to the letter, Disney World is simply out of the question. They’ve made it impossible to experience anything other than waiting in lines for hours and hours. And that’s BEFORE you talk about the insane prices. Yes, I expect food, etc. to cost more inside the park. But the rate of price increase is ridiculous, compared to what you get.

Besides, Universal has Nintendo World on the way. That’s much more appealing at this point.

  12. I agree and I have no idea how anyone can afford to go these days.
We went in 2019. Family of 3 when our daughter was 5 years old. We went in August and we stayed 9 days and we did 5 park days, 2 at magic Kingdom. We booked via Costco and stayed at the Hilton across from Disney Springs as it was a partner hotel, so you got the fast pass perks, early entry, free shuttle etc. Hotel and park tickets for the trip was $3000 cdn at the time. My in-laws came as well and trailed their trailer. So my wife and daughter went for the drive down with them, but stayed in the hotel with me whereas my in-laws camped. I flew down by myself from Syracuse NY as it was cheaper than flying out of the Canadian Cities. We flew back as a family. I think in the end, the flight was around $1000 USD which included the parking. So we were at $4000. We did a couple of firework parties so we would not miss out on the fireworks and a couple character dinning. Other than that, we ate at the hotel or Disney Springs or at the other attractions (we visited the alligator park).
All in all, after we paid for everything, I think it came to around $5500 cdn, maybe even $6000.
We went all out in regards to the parks and the dessert parties and character dinning as we did not know if we would ever return.
Well, skip 5 years later and we now have a 1 year old son. I cannot imagine he will ever get the chance to go. I suspect the same trip today will cost $9000? We cannot go off period asy wife is a teacher.
This year, we have done a cruise and are doing a resort in the Caribbean and it will cost about the same as our 2019 Disney trip.
I loved the trip. I loved how much my daughter lived it, although her memories are fuzzy today.
But man, I just cannot fathom paying the money today or in the next few years to bring our son.

  13. This makes me so happy my boyfriend and I took our big Disney trip in 2021, right before Genie launched and a lot of other changes happened. Staying (very close to the park) with family for free definitely helped us cut costs, but even so, we went for three days, did all 4 parks (parkhopper), ate at least one restaurant meal in park every day, bought lots of drinks and snacks and merch (including lightsabers for the bf), and kept it under 2,000 for both of us.

Last year, we did Universal basically the same way and it was about 2/3 the price we paid for Disney in 2021(again, with lots of restaurant meals and wands and merch for both of us). I honestly doubt we'll ever do Disney again as adults with no kids.
