There's a quality of vulnerability in Cat's voice that has always captured my attention. Yes, the lyrics invite that kind of connection, too, but I consider Cat Steven's a genuine "folk" (people's) singer.
Then I was 16 and had a ticket to his London concert but was cancelled because he got sick. I was in a cafe in Paris, I saw this guy at a table with his guitar. ‘Are you who I think you are?’, I said. He responded, ‘I think I am who you think I am,’ He said. I asked, ‘Are you feeling better? I am so hurt not seeing you in concert. ‘Which one of my songs is your favorite? He asked. Sad Lisa Lisa. Without hesitation he picked up his guitar and sang it to me. I had my own personal concert, I was beyond happy! He grabbed my school book and signed it for me. Then quietly got up and left the cafe saying, ‘see you at my next concert.’❤
