The Overwatch World Cup (OWWC) is an event that many fans of the game hold dear to their hearts.
As an international tournament that not only gave a chance for players to represent their respective countries but also catch the eyes of prospective teams. Many players who have found their way into the Overwatch League have at one point or another graced the stage of the OWWC whether it be at one of the regional qualifiers or at the playoffs held at BlizzCon.
While the event is fondly remembered, the OWWC was not without its own set of issues, especially in its later iterations with concerns that focus and budget would be cut in favor of directing resources to the Overwatch League.
As with most esports leagues and events, the pandemic presented a series of unique challenges for organizations to overcome. The OWWC is one such event that has been at a standstill as Activision Blizzard prioritizes maintaining their flagship league and the launch of Overwatch 2 while remaining relatively silent on the future of this event.

Do you think they will ever bring it back?
french crowd 2017 was something else
this video hits different after hearing that it’s back.
Bro I have news
given it has come back its very clear what it was. the pandemic and i had a feeling that it clearly was that for all this time
WE ARE BACK IN 2023!
EYO EYO ITS BACK
IT'S BAAAAAACK
We’re back boys, we did it 🥹
Eileen said backstage staff told him to get ready and go
The 2018 World Cup is still the only esports championship Ive watched entirely. It was so much fun and really got me into playing overwatch a LOT more competitively to the point where I didnt have a lot of matches were I was getting outplayed.
Putting it on YouTube took too much effort that's what killed it taking it off the game
Because the pros was underskilled to a degree fucking the comunity up they needed more risky players then ur typical dick rub defence
When things are made from corporate overspending on games not yet established and could easily flame out like a lot of games that garner quick popularity and people overextend to make quick money.
Thanks for mentionning the 2016 France team, it really was garbage and I got quite mad at that, good thing the team after were pretty good (except for Winz when he ruined)
2016 Korea dominant
2017 Canada underdog story+crazy rivalry Korea vs USA (most fun world cup)
2018 Korea dominant (personal strongest dream team)
2019 USA dominant (personal favorite dream team)
Which worlds cup was your favorite?
Oh God, Overwatch is becoming the new HOTS.
At least we’ll always have Jesse McCree. Or are they still changing his name to Bob or something because of the messed up employee he’s named after.
Remember the "Let Torbjorn wall run" and "Let Zenyatta walk?
Those were funny memes that Overwatch devs actually made a simulation of. xD
First ow world cup was the pick of the game
Ironically Ster deserved to be there more than any of the other boobs on that team. luv u ster
Use me as R.I.P. OW world cup button.
Those players got cancelled
Esports are dead
I saw Internet Hulk at the 1:10 second mark, oh my heart…
The time between overwatch launching and overwatch 2 being announced is shorter than the time between overwatch 2 being announced and now.
I think korea is just too op against other countries.
eSports should only be in CS and dota
I really hope they will do one again someday, these were such a lot of fun
That's why I play on ETF2L.
I think you should have also talked about the atmosphere that was present at the Paris World Cup Stages. The atmosphere and the french fans were absolutely amazing, one of the great moments of e-sports. The casters said they'd never ever seen such a crowd of passionate fans. This is to show that World Cup had a place in e-sports and was really enjoyed.
I hope to come back in some point, the pandemic its finishing, as a ow fan i can't forget the Usa 2-4 korea or the hanamura map betteween cada and Korea in 2017, some playas like mangachu bomb on semifinals VS sweden
And what to say about the hearthbraking 3-2 from Korea to finland on 2018 and UK taking to map 4 korea in the same year
"World Cups" are always the best tournaments.
Xqcl
I'm still not over Finland blowing our lead against Sweden in 2016 and not getting a medal
The more mainstream competitive OW got, the worse it got. Once OWL came out, everything felt soulless, but for one weekend during the WC, we got that emotional, compassionate Overwatch back that we havent seen since Apex. Would really love to see it come back.
I never watched the actual OWL past the first season but I enjoyed the OWWC like a mf
World Cup has always been better than OWL. No contest. Could care less about OWL, it’s got way less passion. I love country vs country tournaments in general. It’s way more personal.
Honestly year 1 of owl and ow world cup was peak entertainment esports, maybe even year 2
This is probably the most cringe thing I’ve seen on a while lmaoo😂😂
Overwatch is the story of a great game in the hands of an awful Company
The world cup viewer was unmatched in viewing quality. Being able to watch the game pretty much live in-game is something that would have kept me glued to OWL.
It all went to shit when they got everyone watching to vote for the mvp yet they made it litterally impossible for the most voted player to actually win. Fuck blizz for that. I don't even like xqc but you can't treat people like that!!
when he said mickie i shed a tear
