7 Of The Most Faked Seafoods In The World | Big Business | Business Insider

World

Seafood may be one of the most commonly fraudulent foods we come in contact with, according to the ocean-conservation nonprofit Oceana. Your red snapper could actually be a tilapia fillet. That wild-caught salmon? It could be farm-raised. Crab, lobster, and scallops have also been victims of fraudulent swaps — and some of the substitutions could be harmful to human health. But there are also entire criminal rings smuggling seafood across the world. They often fish illegally and have been involved in human trafficking. Why is it so hard to catch bad actors in seafood supply chains? And how can we make sure we’re getting the seafood that’s on the label?

  1. I'm Indonesian, and I remember how after the government crackdown on illegal fishing on our waters started and they blew up many fishing ships afterwards. Many of the ships were either from China or Vietnam. After that more fishes started to go into our local markets. I remember the price became much more affortable and supply increased. I don't think the government still doing the blow ups nowadays, however we really need to step up even more against these illegal fishing industries and for more sustainable options too.

  2. With 59 percent mislabeled and fraud rate on the market have only one meaning; sentences given must so small and insignificant compared to profit, anyone not doing a fraud in a fish market for low risk high reward is basicly an idiot.

  3. 8/10 top IUU fishing companies are from China…. I am not surprised. Chinese fishermen do not respect other countries' fishing waters.

  4. Here in the US corporations pay the government to let them commit seafood fraud. For example they paid to be allowed to claim escolar as "white tuna". Escolar is known as the diarrhea fish because about 4 ounces will cause you to have diarrhea. More recently the government was bribed to allow pollack to be sold as cod. So the lower cost pollack which fed millions, is now passed off as much more costly cod.

  6. Humankind is the most violent, earth destroying species on the planet. To stop all this racketeering, why just humans turn vegan and eat plant based foods. The philosophy of 'Live and let live' is the ultimate survival point
