  4. RADM Callahan was killed in a night action while aboard the USS San Francisco during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, which took place in pitch darkness except for the flashes of naval gunfire. The San Francisco engaged in a close quarters gun battle with the larger and much more powerful Japanese battleship Hiei. The San Francisco and other US cruisers and destroyers, while outgunned by Hiei delivered such heavy fire on the Japanese battleship that it was left aflame and drifting, only to be attacked the next day by US aircraft, and then scuttled by the Japanese to prevent it falling into US hands.
