When it comes to kids, most adults in our society don’t take them seriously. You can’t really blame these adults for feeling this way since kids are still developing socially and physically, working on becoming well-rounded adults in the future. But it seems that kids need to be taken more seriously nowadays, and they’re now showing a level of maturity that you can only find in educated mentors and older adults. So, perhaps these 10 kids are the exception to the general stereotype and it should signal the fact that kids have the power to change the world. Not only did they make an impact on the world, but they left a legacy that will survive long after they surpass adulthood.
For, Jack Andraka managed to change the world of cancer detection at the age of 16. He patented a method that involves detecting a protein in urine that can help detect pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancer. Not only is it ground breaking, but it is also very inexpensive. Malala Yousafzai miraculously survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban for trying to bring education to girls in the Middle East. Malala moved on to be the youngest person to earn a Nobel Peace Prize as well as speak to the United Nations on changing the world. She has surpassed others in character and maturity and has reached a level of eloquency that most of us can only dream of.
Have you ever been friends with or related to someone who’s blind? You’ve probably seen them read braille. Guess what? A young blind teen by the name of Louis Braille, who devised a way to read while he was studying at a school for the blind in Paris. At the young age of 19, he was teaching braille to others and the practice took off. Then we have the tragic story of Iqbal Masih, who was sold into bonded child labor in the carpet industry. He managed to escape at 10 years old, when he joined the Bonded Labour Liberation Front of Pakistan and he helped free over 3000 children. Sadly, he was assassinated not too long after, and it was believed he was killed by the carpet mafia. Speaking of children who died too young, we all know the story of Anne Frank and her famous diary. While she and her family were hiding in her father’s office building for a few years, Anne eventually passed on at the concentration camp she was imprisoned in. Thanks to her diary, we are able to get a glimpse of what life was like in Nazi Germany.
Just from the stories of these ten kids, you can easily see that age really is just a number. No matter how old you are, kids have the ability to impact the world in a positive way that can immortalize them in such a way that people will use their methods, inventions, and be inspired by their bravery. Their actions and contributions will end up surpassing their lifetimes and inspire other young people to make a difference.
